RIME Model

The RIME Framework

The RIME framework is a simple model that helps clinical teachers understand where learners are in their development and tailor their teaching and feedback accordingly. Rather than expecting every learner to perform at the same level, RIME recognizes that learners progress through predictable stages as they develop increasing clinical competence. It provides a common language for describing learner performance and identifying the next steps for growth.

The framework encourages teachers to focus on what learners are ready to learn next and to provide supervision and coaching that matches their stage of development. The four stages include:

• Reporter – Accurately gathers information and communicates patient findings.

• Interpreter – Analyzes clinical information, develops differential diagnoses, and explains clinical reasoning.

• Manager – Develops and justifies diagnostic and management plans.

• Educator – Applies evidence to practice, reflects on learning, and contributes to the learning of patients, peers, and other members of the healthcare team.

The RIME framework can be used to guide observation, provide meaningful feedback, identify learners who need additional support, and encourage progressive development toward independent clinical practice.
