Teaching in the Clinical Environment

The MRCoM provides a continuum of medical education that includes Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME), Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), fellowship training, and Continuing Professional Development. Clinical learning is at the heart of this continuum. From their earliest experiences in medical school through residency, learners develop the knowledge, skills, clinical reasoning, professionalism, and judgement required for independent practice by caring for patients under the supervision of experienced physicians. Clinical teachers play a critical role at every stage, helping learners progressively assume greater responsibility while ensuring safe, high-quality patient care.

Although learners in UGME and PGME differ in their level of knowledge and responsibility, they share a common educational philosophy. Learning is integrated with clinical practice, supported by coaching and feedback, and grounded in authentic patient care. Throughout their training, learners are encouraged to become reflective practitioners who continuously seek feedback, apply evidence to practice, collaborate effectively within healthcare teams, and provide compassionate, patient-centred care.
