Welcome to the University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Resident Research page. Our goal is to provide important information and advice to support residents undertaking research work.
A letter from the Chair of the PGME Resident Research Coordinator Council:
A career in medicine can be extremely rewarding whether spent helping individual patients (a tremendous honour), conducting research, teaching the next generation, or providing leadership in medical education or health care administration. Many people achieve careers that blend these activities in varying proportions. I like conducting research for its potential impact on improving care of future patients, the enjoyment that comes from working in teams, and the creative outlet of designing studies.
While the goal of health researchers is to change the world through achieving improvements in health, there are a number of other benefits of conducting research during residency. For those of you who are already interested in a career that includes research, conducting research during residency will obviously further your career development. However, conducting high quality research will improve the grounding of any resident in the scientific basis of medicine. Successful projects can also lead to cash prizes, free trips, and improved competitiveness for fellowships and academic positions. And we hope to subliminally attract additional residents to careers in health research, as the need is great.
For those interested in even greater research training experience, the Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) is a flexible, 24 month (minimum) Royal College specialty program to further research training and career development in a way that integrates clinical experience with an 80% protected time allocation for graduate or postgraduate research education.
Please feel free to contact me or the CIP administrator with your research related queries or to discuss and plan potential research opportunities.
