Picking a Research Problem -- The Critical Decision

When choosing a research project, we suggest focusing on four critical success factors:

1) An important project
The project must be motivating to you and your supervisor or you will have trouble focusing sufficient time to succeed during residency. The project must also be important to others as well or it will not have the impact that your work should.

2) A feasible project
No matter how important the question, a project that is not feasible to complete during residency cannot be successful. Some potential constraints to consider are: your time; your supervisor’s time; the sample size required to answer the question; the length of time available for recruitment and observational follow-up; and the availability of funding for materials, special services or additional staff.

3) A well-designed project
To lead to a positive impact on the future, your project must have the most appropriate study design to support its validity.

4) A well-supervised project
You may have either one single supervisor or a team of supervisors. In either case, your project supervision must include both expert content knowledge of the field you are working in and expert methods knowledge of the study design that you are using.

2) Program-Funded MSc. - Some surgery programs now have the option to complete a 12-month research-based Masters of Surgery. The Masters of Surgery can also be used to toward the Royal College CIP designation if planned as a 2-year program instead of one year of research training.

Health Research Ethics Board (HREB): For chart review projects
Biomedical Research Ethics Board (BREB): For clinical trials and other studies that require any form of significant contact with participants.

Annual Approval Forms and Checklists
Form required: Annual Study Status Report Form
*Due 4-6 weeks prior to the expiry date on the previous approval
*If recruitment is ongoing, submit one copy of the current Informed Consent Form (ICF) as well.

In addition to the University of Manitoba REB approval, each project conducted through a major institution/hospital must also gain approval from the corresponding Research Impact/Research Review Committee(s).
